Board of Directors Update - June 2014

The Board of Directors reports are as follows for the month of June 2014.

Please see the separate "Letter from the President" for this month's President's Report.

Vice President (Frank Bleszinski):
It appears the demand for Youth Firearm Safety training has been mostly satisfied. With 46 badges issued thus far, the last 2 sessions were attended by a total of 5 youths.

July 26 has been scheduled as the last session prior to the August 1 enforcement date of the badge requirement. Recognizing that new members will have youths and current members will have youths growing into the age requirements, we will schedule sessions in the future. Please watch the website for details.

Outdoor Range (Dave Williams):
Please remember that the there are target frames marked 'pistol target'. These frames are intended to be used on the pistol side's 25 and 30 yard back stops. Also, remember to check the club calendar to mark the days the local police departments are using the range for training. Don't forget to check the outdoor range if you need brass for reloading.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out on the range in the last few months

Indoor Range (Al Croteau):
With the warmer weather on its way the A/C will be installed. The unit is controlled by a thermostatic that is connected to the 110 volt outlet. Therefore, please don’t try to operate the unit with it's controls.

Since the blower motors filters were changed (about one month ago), the motors have run over 200 hours. At present there has been no increase in pressure drop across the filters. The interior of the range was cleaned along with all the light bulbs. This has increased the lighting on the range. A one hour timer was installed for the lower bathroom light. Please only turn it part way.

With the increase in activity of the range the club’s electric cost have increased. The air handling system is powered by two 7.5 hp motors. They use a lot of power. When leaving the range, turn off the lights and blowers.

Trap (Tony Capone):
The trap range is in full swing and with warmer weather here it will be busy. Please remember to follow the sign up procedure and be patient on busy days. If you would like to use the field to practice you may do so. You must abide by the same safety rules. You can bring a throwing machine if you have one or use a hand thrower. If you want to go out on the field and collect clay targets that have been thrown and did not break, please feel free to do so.

Please remember that on one Sunday a month, trap will be interrupted for approximately 15 mins for new member orientation. We were all new members at one time and we need to remember to give the new members the same respect that we got when we joined! Please note that a few times a year we run trap training classes and we need to close up a few minutes earlier than normal. If this is a problem for you, try to get to the range at 9am on those days so you can get more rounds in.

We had a service tech from Pat Trap come by on May 20th and fully service our trap throwing machine. It is now 100% and I would like to keep it that way. If you are an approved trap operator and there is a problem with the machine, please contact me ASAP!

On Saturday June 14th at 9am, we will be having a 75 bird shoot. As always, this event will be open to members and their family. Please check the website for more info on this event.

On Saturday June 28th at 9am, we will be having a 100 bird shoot. As always, this event will be open to members and their family. Please check the website for more info on this event.

If you would like to be on the ASC Trap email list, please contact me at aceaceallin@yahoo.com  Please put "email list" in subject.

Archery (Bob Felsberg):
Wishing all an enjoyable summer, Tuesday Night Archery will continue same time, all summer long; watch for updates on ASC club calendar. At some point I will be purchasing ThermaCell units available for sale to club members. This will be posted on club website when available.

We have received the 55# longbow and will have this set up shortly. We also will be receiving a truckload of bark mulch and will need help spreading it out. A new bridge needs to be built at target 19; this and additional improvements, developments and more info to be posted on club website.

Security (William MacKenzie):
During the month there was a key reported missing from the key access box located beside the office, the key was for maintenance access. I replaced the missing key. Please be advised that if a key is taken from the lock box, it must be returned after use.

I also received a report the driveway gate was left open for a few days. I responded to the club and found that the switch was left in the open position. I turned it to the closed position resetting the gate. If a gate key is given to a contractor or someone working on the property, they have to be instructed to reset the gate and return the key.

There was also a M.V. break reported by a club member where a car was entered by breaking a window to gain entry. The club’s security camera recording system will be reviewed for a possible recording of the event.

While conducting a security walk of the facilities, I found that someone had cleaned out the fire place in the club house and dumped the ashes into the trash bucket. This is a dangerous practice which could cause serious consequences if a hot ember were in the ashes.

Facilities (Mike Pierce):
The following facilities projects are those completed, initiated, or proposed that are in addition to general maintenance projects. There is no assurance that those listed on the "wish list" will be progressed further as that will be largely dependant upon completion of appropriate due diligence/feasibility undertakings.

Projects Completed:

  • New filters were installed in the air make up system on March 31, 2014 for the indoor range, and the air quality is noticeably improved. The lower level of the club house has been de-leaded and all waste has been removed from club property.

  • The lower space of the club house has been deleaded and all waste has been removed from club property.

Funding approved and work in progress:

  • Trap shelter modifications including wiring, insulation and new siding

Approved but not yet started:

  • outdoor range grading
  • outdoor range rifle safety modification: decision and initiation of proposed options
  • Installation of curbs in parking lot
  • The archery shooting stand behind the trap range is to be relocated to a proper location

Now that the summer months are upon us, there are a few minor projects to be finished. The backyard of the club house has been regraded, loamed, and seeded. Projects to be done over the summer months include snow guards being installed on the clubhouse roof, and installing new speakers in the club house ceiling.

Community Relations (Paul Miller):
At our May meeting, the four ASC Scholarship winners were announced: Marianna Paradise, Melissa A. Curran, Elsie H. Washburn, and Naomi Bledsoe. In addition, the Andover High winner is Qingyuan Wu, and the North Andover High winner is Evan Martin. We hope to have them at the June meeting.

We congratulate these winners and wish them the best in their future endeavors.

Training (Sam Washburn):
Our first Beginner Skeet Training class was held in May. It was well attended and a definite success -- over 40 people were on the waitlist. We will be adding additional classes over the summer to accommodate the demand. Those on the wait list will get priority.

Many of our other classes will continue to be offered over the summer. Always check the web site for dates and times, and to register for a class.

Membership (Mark Klove):
